Once upoon a time, a princess married a prince and they lived happily ever after. The End.
Fairy tales are amongst the cliches of our writing world. Right along side of them stand the popular jock, the slutty cheerleader and the absent-minded professor. These are the stock characters that are used the most in short stories, novels, and even poetry. When developing a character, do you create them or do you already know them?
Most people who create stock, two demensional characters find that they know them fairly easily. However, if you truly develope a character from scratch, it may take a little longer. This is because for every character, there are endless possibilities. When you choose a look or a personality trait, it rules out one of the many things that character could have or would have been.
Avoiding the cliche may seem hard, but here are some things that can help. First, knowing a cliche when you read one. Being able to identify an over used phrase can help you avoid using them. Second, know when a cliche works in your favor. Sometimes, you can use a cliche to make a point, other times you can twist a cliche slightly to make it come across with a different tone. Third, let yourself be creative and develop a real "person".
Avoiding a cliche should not set a break in your creativity. Remember that what you are trying to say is most important. If you keep cliche's away from your writing, it is more original, but sometimes, a cliche can help you get started on the road that you are trying to get to.
